Long Beach Transit Case Study

Long Beach Transit

Background

Long Beach Transit (LBT) is a provider of public transit service to the city of Long Beach, California and surrounding communities. LBT employees a staff of nearly 700 and operates a fleet of approximately 200 buses.

In 2001 LBT had determined that their organization would benefit from the implementation of a fully integrated EAM system. Their goal was to migrate existing system processes and data to a new system, and improve organizational effectiveness through expanded system use and the integration of best practices with EAM system functionality.

Long Beach Transit Business Requirements

After selecting the EAM system that best fit their requirements, LBT began work to determine the best service provider to implement their new system. Their requirements included experience with EAM/ERP system implementations, experience in the transit industry, and functional and technical staff that could provide LBT with a high level of confidence that a successful implementation would be completed. Additionally, LBT felt that there would be areas where custom applications would be required to meet operating needs.

Turnpoint Solutions brought both business process expertise and industry knowledge to the table, and that made the difference when selecting the right system and managing the implementation risk.

Solution

LBT selected Turnpoint Solutions (TPSCO) to lead the project and provide all necessary resources for the migration from legacy systems. TPSCO had significant experience in the transit industry and provided critical domain specific integration knowledge to LBT.

The TPSCO project manager consolidated a full review of current practices, expectations, and organizational capabilities. Simultaneously, technical consultants assisted LBT with hardware and system software acquisitions. TPSCO staff then provided assistance and instruction to LBT to facilitate system set up and configuration. At this point, system and planning were in place, and efforts turned to data and business process migration.

TPSCO provided a full range of functional specialists required for transition to the new EAM system – Finance, Grants Management, Supply Chain, Maintenance, Human Resources, Payroll, and Security. The TPSCO team and corresponding LBT resources jointly completed all phases of the system migration – define current processes, solution design and final implementation plans, data migration and testing, training, custom report development, and post go-live support.

TPSCO provided specialized services to LBT to meet all business requirements. For example, a comprehensive grant management program was developed and integrated with the new EAM system. This software application improved data visibility, reduced processing and management costs, and provided LBT with a knowledge management framework. This, in turn, drove major improvements in this vital aspect of finances so critical to public transit operations.

Results
